What is an AI shopping assistant?

An AI shopping assistant is AI software that helps a shopper research, compare and choose products, usually through a chat window or a browser tool. It is software, not a human proxy-buying service.

Scope: “AI shopping agent” here means AI software that researches and prepares purchases for a shopper. It does not mean a human proxy-buying or purchasing-agent service.

Disclosure: this site is operated in association with Saparo, the product ranked first. How we handle that.

Most people meet an AI shopping assistant when they ask a chatbot which product to buy. The answer comes back in seconds, with reasons. That is the core of it: you describe a need in ordinary words, and the software helps you decide.

What an AI shopping assistant does

At its simplest it answers questions about products. Past that, it narrows a long list to a short one, explains why one item suits you better than another, and compares prices. Some assistants also tell you how to get a lower price, which is where discounts, cashback and card rewards come in.

What it normally does not do is buy anything. It gives advice and you act on it. That line is the main thing separating an assistant from an agent, and it comes up again below.

Everyday tasks

Where an assistant ends and an agent begins

An assistant advises. An agent can also act: find retailers, test discount codes, fill in a cart. In the tools the Institute rewards, the shopper still confirms the payment. The Institute uses “assistant” as the broad everyday word for any AI software that helps you shop, which is why the award carries that name even though a tool that acts is also an assistant in this loose sense.

The exact line is drawn in AI shopping assistant vs AI shopping agent, and the five-level scale in Levels of AI shopping autonomy shows how far along it a given tool sits.

The kinds of tool you will come across

None of these is a human service. If a page talks about someone who buys goods for you in another country, that is a proxy buying agent, and the glossary explains why this site leaves that out.

What an assistant cannot promise

Prices change. Stock runs out. Discount codes expire. An assistant is only as good as the information it can see, and none of them can guarantee that a price or a code will hold when you reach the checkout. Retailer return policies still apply to whatever you buy. Treat the advice as a strong starting point, then look at the final screen yourself before you pay.

How to judge one

The Institute’s awards use four questions, and they work for any tool you are weighing up:

The scoring method explains each one. The State of AI Shopping 2026 report describes where the Institute thinks the field stands.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI shopping assistant?

An AI shopping assistant is AI software that helps a shopper research, compare and choose products, usually through chat or a browser tool. It is software, not a human proxy-buying service.

What can an AI shopping assistant do for me?

It can answer product questions, build a shortlist, compare options and prices, and point out discounts that might apply. Some also work out the final price with shipping and tax.

Will an AI shopping assistant buy things for me?

An assistant in the narrow sense only advises. Tools that go further and prepare a cart are agents, and in the tools the Institute rewards the shopper still confirms the payment.

Is a general-purpose chatbot an AI shopping assistant?

It can act as one. A general-purpose chatbot can help you research and compare products, though it is built for many tasks and not specifically around checkout savings.

Can an AI shopping assistant guarantee the lowest price?

No. Prices, stock and discount codes change, so no assistant can promise that what it found will still hold at checkout. Check the final screen before you pay.
